This knee replacement surgery comes under one of the most common bone surgeries.

Types of Knee Replacement Surgeries

Depending on the requirement and severity of the injury, the replacement surgery can be of various types.

Partial Knee Replacement Surgery

As the name goes, in partial knee replacement surgery, instead of replacing the entire knee joint, only the damaged part of the knee is removed and replaced. The rest of the knee is preserved.

Partial Knee Replacement can be done in case of:

➢ Uni-compartment (Half) Knee Replacement

➢ Patello-femoral joint (joint under the kneecap) replacement

➢ Other than arthritis, there are other causes that could require knee replacement various causes like

➢ Obesity

➢ Trauma

➢ Bursitis and more.

Uni-compartment (Half) Knee Replacement

The damaged cartilage and bone are resurfaced with plastic/metal components during knee replacement surgery. Uni-compartment is also known as Half/ Partial knee replacement that means a portion of the knee is resurfaced. This is applicable for patients whose disease is limited to one particular area of the knee and is an alternative procedure for total knee replacement.

Usually, The patients spend less time in hospital after the Uni- compartment knee replacement surgery because a partial knee replacement is done through a small incision. They can get back to normal position and do activities sooner than the patients who have undergone total knee replacement surgery.

Patello-Femoral Joint (joint under the kneecap) Replacement

It is a type of Partial Knee replacement surgery in which a portion of the knee will be resurfaced. The damaged bone is resurfaced with plastic or metal components in the Patello-Femoral joint or Joint under the kneecap replacement surgery. Patella is nothing but Kneecap and the femur is nothing but the thigh bone that the patella rests in. It is also an alternative procedure for Total knee replacement.

Usually, it will be done through a smaller incision so there is less damage to soft tissues in the knee. The recovery will be faster in this type of surgery and the patients will return to normal activities more quickly than other patients.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Total knee replacement surgery is required when the knee joint is severely damaged. In this surgery, the entire knee joint is replaced with artificial metal or plastic replacement parts called the ‘prostheses’.

During a total knee replacement, the end of the femur bone and the end of the lower leg bone, the tibia is removed and replaced with a plastic piece with a metal stem. The knee cap, the patella is also replaced. This surgery is usually recommended for older patients suffering from pain and functionality loss from arthritis after failed results from conservative therapy methods.
